Holiday Card With Color Pencil

I've been wanting to try color pencil for a long time and I finally did it. The skill is different from water color or Copic coloring and need lots of patience. I defintely need some more practices. But it was really fun. After finishing coloring, I used white gel pen to add fur texture on the hat and applied white ink + snow stencil to the background. Hopefully it's not looking too boring.

Whale Birthday Card

This card was inspired by MFT sketch challenge. For the background, I hand drew the waves with glue pen and heat embossed them white. Then I used ink smooshing technique to apply various blue disktress ink colors. For the whale, I colored it with distress markers on a separate piece of watercolor paper and fussy cut it out. For finishing details, I covered the entire wave area with iridescent sequin. Unfortunately it didn't show well on the picture.

Yeti New Year

Another card with this cute yeti from Mama Elephant!

Lots of heat embossing in this card and very little Copic coloring. Overall a very easy card to make, although I did spend quite a bit of time experimenting a new color combination for Xmas night sky. Out of all the ones that I have explored, I liked this color combination the most. It doesn't look like a night sky as I wanted in the first place, but I still love it. In this combination, I applied 5 distress ink colors: chipped sapphire, seedless preserve, anitique linen, shabby shutters, peeled paint.

Yeti For Christmas

I've never made a Xmas card in Sept/Oct. Only because I saw this super cute yeti from Mama Elephant and ordered on the day they were released!

I colored everything with Copic markers. For the mountains on the back, I ink blended with distress ink ice spruce. For the mountains in the front, I ink blend with distress ink mermaid lagoon first then ice spruce to make it less bright. For both mountains, I splattered some water, dabbed them off with paper towel, then again splattered some white acrylic paint. I usually only do either water or paint. The effect of combining two really amazed me. For caps and hills, I also lightly applied distress ink ice spruce to add some shades.

No-line Watercoloring Hippos

This is my final card to 2017 MFT super star constest in the coloring virtuoso category. Coloring is defintely not my thing and seeing so many good works submitted, it also takes courage to participate!

I stamped the images with distress ink and colored them with a mix of Daniel Smith watercolor and Zig clean color real brush (just for the hippos).

Pirate and Treasure

This is my second entry to MFT super star card contest.

The card itself was very simple, but to decide what color theme, I pondered for a long time. In one idea, I wanted to use blue for ocean. In another idea, I wanted to use brown for treasure map. I couldn't decide which colors so I tried out both of them just to see which one looks better. But it turned out even after finishing both of them, I still couldn't decide which one looked better! I then seek advice from my husbands and sons - 3 people, and guess what? It was a tie (one vote for each and the third one couldn't decide)!

So I decided to post both of them. Please leave a comment and let me know which one you think is better.

All Seasons 3D Decorative Card

I made a fun 3D decorative card today using MFT stamps. It has 4 sides and I designed it in theme of four seasons.

To begin, all of backgrounds were ink blended with distress inks on a single piece of bristol paper (9''x9''), while the paper is still flat. It got really messy during the process and I almost decided to give up. After I folded the paper and formed the 3D shape, I continued with the hopes that I can use images to cover up the ink stains. Luckily I decided to continue. For most of the images, I attached them using folded acetates so that it looks like they sit up or float in the air/water. Finally I put sentiments at the bottom.

Stardust

I really enjoyed playing with Hero Arts August card kit. It was a bit different from my usual stamp set which I get to color the images.

In this card, I first ink blended the background with the 3 ink colors from Hero Arts May 2017 card kit. Then I stamped the girls and doves with black ink and heat embosed the stardust/girl. The background was a bit lighter than I wanted, so I went back and applied watercolor with darker shades of the same colors on top (same ink cubes with water added). In the end, I splattered some watercolor droplets and white acrylic paint to finish the card.

Happy Birthday Trail

So far I've been using distress markers and Zig clean colors markers for watercolor cards. I always feel that when coloring a stamped image, watercoloring and Copic marker coloring look just the same. I was not able to generate beatiful watercolor blooming effect and it probably because I was not able to let go. On top of that, Copic markers bring more contrast to shadings. So I used Copics for most of my cards.

Lately I had the opportunity to try Daniel Smith artist grade paints and was amazed by how easy it is to create blooming effect and bring bright contrast to the images. My skill certainly didn't improve. Or rather, it was rusted because the frequcny of me using watercolor was dropping. Then I realized it was the fine granularity pigment in watercolor markers that might be making it hard for me to generate watercolor texture. I don't know if that makes sense...

Nonetheless I was really amazed by the special texture these artist grade pigments bring. Below is the card I made with a DS watercolor palette.

My favorite of all is the texture this green apatite brings!

Birthday of A Pirate

I'm sharing a pirate birthday card today with the inspiration from MFT sketch challenge. Pirate is a popular birthday theme among small kids. I'm sure this card will become handy one day :)

For the background, I used the following distress inks.

top: fired brick, spiced marmalade, gathered twigs
bottom: fired brick, gathered twigs, walnut stain, black soot

It was a little out of control when I spritzed some water on the background. The water dots went everywhere instead of around the sun. It looked a bit messy but I decided to continue.
